Hey Holmans!
How you all doing? Sounds like it’s kinda snowy in Utah right now, that’s pretty exciting... especially because here it’s so freaking hot!!! Last night when i went to bed it was 90 degrees outside! It’s kinda miserable to go to sleep here, but luckily I’m so tired from working in the day it’s not too bad....
So this past week was a good one, it went by so fast that i can hardly believe it. I Literally feel like i was just writing you guys (haha I’m sure you guys feel the same way) but anyways, something crazy happened last Monday, we had just barely gotten to the pench from a super hot day of playing futbol with the whole zone when all of the sudden a huge ginormous windstorm hit. Me and my comp ran inside our pench and as we were in there we listened as the wind picked up the medal pieces of shingles on our roof and blew them off. The trees were flying everywhere and it was raining like crazy. We stayed indoors the whole time, and in about an hour the storm left. As me and my comp headed out and we could see that it had done some pretty gnarly damage. It took out power lines, trees, pulls, the roofs of houses, everything. The storm also left me and our whole entire area with out power... and even worse without water.
The Next day in the mourning we received word that a family in the ward had been hit even harder by the storm. Me my comp and the other two missionaries in the ward headed off to the family Luna. As we arrived we saw a Huge tree that had fallen right in front of the house. Nobody could go in or out, and the only person there was the elders quorum president chipping at the tree with nothing but a machete (haha i don’t know how to say it in English - a big sword) As we started walking over to him, he said to us that he had just barely finished saying a prayer that the lord would send somebody else to help him, and as he looked over his shoulder he saw four missionaries walking towards him....We all took turns cutting the tree and hauling it out, and eventually we got it all cleared out. After going around helping lots of people, we were told that it was a tornado that had come through and cleared the area, so far there was one report only one person dead.
The whole entire week we have been without water and with out power. I Probably should listen to the prophets when they say that we should keep food storage...because it was a miserable week without water. The very first shower i took was yesterday...after a whole week of sweating and working in pants and a tie in the hot 115 degree sun. hahaha And what’s even worse is i got a haircut on Wednesday, and i couldn’t take a shower after we cut my hair...so i had a bunch of hair sticking to me the week as well! haha bad idea! As of right now we still don’t have water, but the other elders do have water, so we can at least take a shower in the morning now and drink some water...but just remember, listen to the prophets and get your 72 hour kit ready...even if you’re a missionary ;)
This past week we also had zone conference in the dark. Me and my comp taught for a lot of it, it was pretty fun teaching to the whole crowd and teaching while our president was there. Also, this past week we taught the familia Fleitas. They’re the family that they’re brother / son died about a month ago. When we got there it was just the mom of the family. She invited us to sit down and talk. As we first started to talk to her everything seemed to be fine, but as we started to dive into the lesson, it was obvious that there was something on her mind, as we asked her what she was thinking she began to cry, and didn’t say anything for what felt like 3 minutes or so, as she began to gather her words, she explained that she was having a super hard day, that she had been hurting so much. She had been thinking of her son, and she told us that no matter how much she occupied her day up with things to do, that the death of her son was on the back of her mind.
Me and my comp testified to her in that moment that we don’t know exactly how she was feeling or what she was going through, but we testified to her that somebody does know, and that’s Christ. All of us pass through hard moments in this life, its part of the process here, to be tried, and learn through those hardships. We explained that God wants us to follow him in these hard moments. If we trust in the Lord, he can give us hope, and can show us the way to happiness. We explained to her that if she chooses to follow Christ, her trials will not stop, but she will have our Savior by her side as she overcomes those trials. We can choose to go through life with or without the Savior, but i know that when we choose to face our trials with Christ, we receive instant help. We receive hope for a better day, and the moment that we do overcome our trials we will be filled with light, and will have grown to be more like our Savior. We testified to her that all of these blessing would be hers, of she choose to follow Christ.
It’s sad to see it, but so many times we invite people to come to Christ, but they don’t do it. We invited her to go to church, to have faith in the lord Jesus Christ and to be baptized...and even though she accepted the goal to be baptized on the 28th, she still hasn’t been to church. Me and my comp are praying a lot that she can make that choice!! Lots of times I’d like to make the choice for people because i know how good it will be for them...i’m sure God feels the same way sometimes...but because he loves us he respects our agency he only invites us to follow him. And as missionaries we do the same. All we can do is invite, and pray to god that they make the write decision. Before we left hermana Fleitas house we shared with her one of my favorite scriptures.
Trust in the lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding, in all they ways acknowledge him, and he will direct thy paths.
It’s my prayer that we can trust in the lord with all of our heart. i love the words to the primary song that says, teach me guide me walk beside me help me find the way, teach me all that i must do, to live with him some day, i know that He will guide us, and tell us what to do and what to say if we trust in the lord and follow him, everything will be put into place, and we will one day live with him.
